The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission

The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission ("Commission," "PRC") operates under the authority of the Public Utilities Act, which became a law in 1941.

The law gave the Commission jurisdiction over public utilities' rates, service, and the issuance, assumption responsibility of the Commission is the approval, rejection or modification of utilities' construction projects.

The Commission regulates approximately 100 electric, water, sewer, and natural gas utilities in New Mexico and has an effect on everyone in the state at one time or another. Municipally owned utility system are exempt from Commission authority, unless the citizens vote to voluntarily accept Commission regulation.

Commission hearings and meeting are open to the public, and comments are solicited from citizens on matters concerning their utility service. Customers are notified of hearings and meeting affecting their utility service through newspapers or other publications of general circulation.

The information in this site provides consumers in New Mexico some general guidelines for use in working with utilities.
